Northfield MN Parks and RecreationAlthough it?s only a 45 minute drive from the Twin Cities, the Cannon River Valley and the City of Northfield offer a variety of beautiful parks and recreation areas that offer year round access to the great outdoors for inhabitants and visitors. The east and west sides of the downtown historic district are connected across the Cannon River by a pedestrian bridge. The district is centered along the river and contains the walkways and public spaces of the Riverside Commons and Ames Park; in the center of the District is the horseshoe shaped Bridge Square, the center for concerts, historical reenactments, and other events through out the year. Northfield has many outdoor areas that have been upgraded to combine nature preserves with more civilized offerings. Babcock Park, Odd Fellows Park, and the Riverside Lions Park each provide more than 20 acres of nature trails, softball fields, bike trails, playground equipment, and sheltered picnic areas for good weather enjoyment, while Sechler Park offers more than 150 acres of nature walks, soccer fields, and other amenities for the outdoor enthusiast. In addition to the public parks, both St. Olaf College and Carleton College have outdoor sports facilities and landscaped grounds that add to the charm of this lovely community.
