Northfield MN Nature AreasThe Cannon River Valley is the central focus in the natural landscape of the Northfield area, and great canoeing and boating are part of the river?s attraction. But there are far more things to do in the area than just boating and canoeing for the outdoor enthusiast, and the fun extends year round. One of the crown jewels of the area is the Carleton Arboretum, with over 800 acres of trees, marshes, meadows, and trails. Established by a former president of Carleton College, the preserve offers some of the finest unspoiled natural landscape in the area. Equally lovely is the Cannon River Wilderness Area, just five miles south of town along the Cannon River. Visitors can enjoy nature trails, wildlife viewing areas, boating and canoeing, and other attractions. Both parks also offer bike trails and cross country skiing in the winter. Nearby Nerstrand Big Woods State Park provides more rugged attractions, with many secluded areas. Hikers can see waterfalls and there are campsites available. As with the other areas, hiking trails abound and there are snowshoe and cross country skiing trails. Beyond the confines of the various parks, the entire countryside around Northfield is made for biking and hiking. Downhill skiing isn?t far away, and snowmobiling is common and popular in winter. The rolling farmlands make for exciting rides no matter the season, and the beauty of the countryside will make any visit to Northfield a memorable one. |
