Northfield MN Historical Society MuseumNorthfield was founded in 1855 by John North, who set the early direction of the town and imparted many strong civic values. The Northfield Historical Society Museum on Division Street offers a variety of exhibits that trace the evolution of the town from its early roots to its robust style of today. The Museum is located n the heart of downtown Northfield?s historic district, which has been restored to its 19th century splendor. It is housed in the Scriver Building, which was the site of the bank that was the target of the infamous Northfield Raid of 1876 that saw the town?s citizens defeating an attempted robbery by the James-Younger Gang. The building was purchased by the town?s historical society in 1975 during the run-up to the Nation?s Bicentennial, and has been refurbished as a museum facility through the donations of many civic organizations and individual citizens. The museum showcases exhibits related to the town?s history. Of particular interest are from the bank robbery. Jesse and Frank James and the Younger brothers had planned a robbery of the bank because of the town?s many resources. The raid was thwarted by the town?s citizens, who rallied to chase and capture the robbers. A walking tour offers the visitor a chance to retrace their steps. There are also exhibits related to the founding of the town, and to its visionary founder, John North, who laid out the town and built many of its enduring institutions. |
