Jesse James Days in Northfield MN

?Get your guns, boys! They?re robbing the bank!? Those words roused the citizens of Northfield on September 7, 1876. Jesse and Frank James, the Younger Brothers, and two of their criminal associates were robbing the First National Bank. It was the gang?s last criminal act, however, as the brave townspeople banded together, stopped the robbery, and ended the careers of some of the West?s most notorious outlaws ? a triumph that is commemorated every year on the weekend after Labor Day at the festival known as Jesse James Days (or, more formally, as ?the Defeat of Jesse James Days?).

Defeat of Jesse James Days has been a tradition in Northfield since 1948, when a group of Northfield residents came together to establish a celebration of the day when the citizens of the town came together to stop the notorious outlaws. Two citizens of the town were killed in the attack, and the celebration seemed a fitting way to honor their bravery and sacrifices as well as the heroism of the townspeople.

The festival features events and treats for the whole family. In addition to the reenactment of the robbery there is a parade, an arts and crafts festival, antique shows, various dinners and barbecues, a horseshoe hunt, and the coronation of a Festival Queen. Buttons and merchandise are available and their sale helps fund the celebration. The entire family will find history and fun at the annual Defeat of Jesse James Days Celebration.
