Carleton CollegeNorthfield, MN, Carleton College was founded in 1866 as Northfield College by a group of Congregational Churches. It changed its name to Carleton College in honor of an early benefactor. The school is consistently ranked as one of the top 20 liberal arts colleges in the US, with particular strength in the natural sciences and mathematics. The school is known for a tradition of service and excellence in the field of international studies and off-campus education. Carleton ranks nationally in the top ten of colleges with students in the Peace Corps, and fully two-thirds of the students are involved in off campus programs at some point during their four-year tenure. Another important aspect of the Carleton experience is the wide variety of extracurricular activities available, from numerous theatre and performing arts groups to varsity sports. Students can become involved in many community service programs as well, and the school has a long history of involvement with the local community. A unique aspect of Carleton is the history of ?pranks? played by students. From the regular repainting of the school water tower (in 2000, students were able to paint a likeness of President Clinton on the tower the night before his commencement address) to the continuing disappearances and reappearances in unlikely places of a bust of German poet Friedrich Schiller (known simply as ?Schiller?), the school spirit combines high achievement with a strong sense of irreverence and fun. |
